digging through the past

Past Projects, Personal stuff

A few weeks ago we got the last of our crap out of storage and moved it into the attic I had a little suitcase in there filled with old projects from my AAU days. My very early textile/fashion design days…and they were not so pretty.

Honestly the first projects I ever did were absolutely horrible. I mean god awful. Thankfully I pulled my shit together and actually became a decent designer.

So of course I am going to share this shit with the world. What can I say about this textile design project?

Bad fabric choice. I am sure it was like $0.49 a yard or something. Bad color choices. Bad technique. Bad collection. All around it was bad and I am just thankful that my teacher at the time didn’t tell me to leave the school and become an accountant or something.

sorry to subject you all to this disaster, but it is fun to see where it all started from. God it is shockingly bad.

Happy New Year!!

Personal stuff, Work Fun

Ok, so I am just starting the New Year now. The officially recognized beginning of the year started off really rocky for me personally and I was like Great. 2011 is going to suck hardcore. That was not the way I wanted to start the year so I decided not to start it. Things have turned around and are on a positive trajectory right now, so it seems like a great time to start the new year and take advantage of all the things that are starting to happen. Here’s to 2011!!

WoooooooHooooooo

So these last couple of weeks have been mad crazy. Last week was the Design Bloggers Conference which I did not attend – it was kinda pricey, but I heard it was good and a MUST DO next year. Even though I didn’t go, I did hit up a bunch of little parties that were going on. The best one was the tweet up hosted by the amazing @ BluePRintBrands I got to meet so many people that I know on twitter finally in real life. Then there was the Trad Home party, the Veranda party and the Secrets of a Stylist launch party which had me go over to Hollywood for the first time in F…O…R…E…V…E…R.

This week has been the longest week ever, trying to get designs done for the amazing Snug Furniture booth at the Architectural Digest Show in NY next week! We collaborated for the ICFF show last year you can check my post about it here.

Well not to toot my own horn, but this one is going to kick that designs ass – like a total beat down. I am so excited to see it installed in the booth, I will be sure to post pictures once we get it all set up. Plus I saw some of the pieces they are showing and they are sick! I think they are some of the coolest pieces and I can’t wait for people to see it. I wish I was a rich girl because I would buy up a ton of their tables. I have no idea where I would fit them in my house, but who cares I would have them none the less!!

UPDATE: My computer lost the internet connection last night while I was doing this post and we installed the wallpaper today so here is a pic of me unrolling the wallpaper (will post an install pic once the space is set up)

So now that the year has finally begun and is off to a great start I believe that Greatness is what we on the brink of (ok, and I will admit that nicki minaj is a total guilty pleasure for me right now)

GREATNESS is what we are ALL on the brink of so let’s make it happen!

25 things you need to know about the REAL me!

Uncategorized

So if you want to learn about the company you can go here, if you want to learn the cleaned up professional part about me you can go here. If you want to know the real me, the one that spends all day working on my computer and occasionally finds the time to meet up with friends you can keep reading!

Here are 25 things you probably don’t know about me, unless you live with me.

1. I curse like a sailor, I drop f-bombs left and right and sometimes they slip out unintentionally.

2. I have a very unhealthy obsession with black pens. I like to draw everything with black pens, going to the art store is very bad for my bank account as I buy almost every pen they have. When I get home I dump them all out on the desk and get a sketchbook out to test out all the lines of the pens, so I know how they all draw. I have a ton of them and I get soooo excited when I go out and buy more!

3. My favorite food is ice cream – I can’t pass it up. I will eat it for lunch or dinner (or both!) yikes!

4. I have a slight addiction to Dr. Pepper, but I think everyone from Texas does.

5. My first car was a ’72 VW Karmann Ghia – dark blue.

6. My second car was a ’71 VW Squareback – orange.

7. I don’t like coffee, but I drink a ton of it. I have to use a ton of Cinnamon Vanilla creamer. To quote the Beastie Boys “I like my sugar with coffee and cream”

8. My favorite band is the Dresden Dolls and my favorite movie is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (and Dirty Dancing!)

9. My background is in Fashion and I am a super design snob. You would never guess it by the way I dress, I’m a super casual and comfy kinda gal, but I am hard to impress when it comes to fashion.

10. I create designs by trying to express a mood and feeling that I feel rather than trying to create the next cool design.

11. I firmly believe there are absolutely no rules to design and if there are, they are just meant to be broken. I don’t work within the pre-defined parameters of what works and what doesn’t.

12. I will watch anything Bravo TV makes a highlight of mine is when @bravotv and @alexmccord started following me on twitter.

13. I like to have people over, but hate being a hostess.

14. I would make a terrible housewife, I hate cooking, cleaning, doing dishes, doing laundry, gardening, grocery shopping and any other domestic duties you can think of. My fiancé is always trying to “domesticate” me and every now and then there are some glimpses of it working, but they are far and few between.

15. I hate matching anything, except maybe shoes 🙂 I like to mix and match everything, pillows, plates, swimsuits, etc.

16. I love to buy jackets, sweaters, coats, I have way too many for someone who lives in SoCal.

17. I have the best fiancé in the world, he helps me with all the domestic parts of life, thank god or we would live off easy mac and never have clean clothes. We both hate putting up clothes though, it becomes a problem. We usually have to dump them all on the bed so we have to put them up before going to sleep.

18. I love to listen to oldies, mainly from the 50s and 60s. I was so excited to get a record player for our living room so we can play all our old vinyl while I sit and drink coffee and do blog posts!

19. I went and camped out at a 3 day Rock Festival in Nurburgring, Germany. That was the only time I have been to Germany and I don’t think anything could top that experience. It was soooo fun and I wish I could go this year.

20. I live in flip flops and when I need to be “fancy” I put on my converse. I need a new pair.

21. When I need to be Ultra fancy and professional I always have my shoes with me, I keep all of my heels in the trunk of my car, that way whenever I get to where I am going and need to throw them on I have all options with me. You never know when you plan to where black heels and then you get there and decide – no silver is way better! Most times I just stick to the converse anyway so it really doesn’t matter.

22. I read A LOT of books! I am even in two book clubs, but am a little behind in the reading at this moment. I have to finish The 19th Wife, start Divisadero, and read Personality Plus: How to Understand Others by Understanding Yourself.

23. I paint my nails crazy colors, teal, aqua, purple, silver, the cooler the color the better. Never red or a french manicure (ugh)!

24. I love to see when people have a strong personal style and it pours out in everything they do, I think it is imperative to find your own style and embrace it, never be afraid to express it.

25. I have a compulsion that every drawing, photo, textile print should be blown up gigantic and on a wall, that is one of the reasons that led me to start my company, I couldn’t keep it inside any longer!!

I don’t take myself too seriously, so that is a peak into the REAL me, the stuff that gets left out of the bio.

Sneaking in to a McQueen Fashion Show…a dream come true.

Uncategorized

I’ve had the idea to do this post for a long time. When I was in college I was very fortunate to be one of the 3 people picked to do an exchange program and study at one of the best fashion design schools in Paris. Before I took off on that journey the head of the fashion department I was going to in SF (the Academy of Art University) told me to try to get into the fashion shows once I was there because it is worth it to see in person. I took that to heart and would skip ALL of my classes when the shows were going on and try to get into as many as possible. I started with the Spring/Summer shows and was fairly successful, then hit a few Couture shows, I was not as successful, but by Fall/Winter I was a pro and got into EVERY show I attempted. I have some very interesting stories of people I met and ways I got in and I have never really shared them except with a few people at the time. So I feel like here is a chance to share. Realizing that couture just wrapped up and Fall will be showing starting March 2nd, I think it is the perfect time.

I went to as many shows as I could and got into some MAJOR shows such as:

Viktor & Rolf, Chloe, Christian Lacroix (3 times), Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, Yoshi Yamamoto, Comme des Garcons, Junya Watanabe, Vivienne Westwood, Galliano, and my all time favorite Alexander McQueen (2 times), along with dozens of other smaller shows.

My plan was to just let everyone know my tricks to getting in and the easiest way to snag a front row seat along with some of my photos from the shows, but I want to start off differntly because when I woke up today and started up tweet deck the first thing I saw was “RIP – Alexander McQueen found dead in his home” and I got chills. He was my biggest inspiration and I was not only fortunate enough to see 2 of his incredible shows in person, but a year later I found myself escorting him in a limo to a dinner in his honor put on by the Academy of Art. It was a huge moment to me and now after hearing that he took his own life I will truly treasure it forever. That humble man who talked about wanting to stay in the hotel room and watch the “Golden Girls” rather than go to the dinner was such a huge inspiration to all young designers and a revolutionary in the fashion world. He turned the standard fashion show into a world of art that you couldn’t look away from and didn’t want to leave when it was over.

For those unfamiliar with his work here a quick video montage of some of his shows.

The first McQueen show I went to, was the best show I saw out of all the others before and after. So for this show it was me and two friends trying to get in. We got there early scoped out the place and realized there was no sneaking in (we tried to at one point and got stopped by security, it was a tad bit embarrassing) so we cozied up to a young intern who was looking very flustered. She had a huge book that contained “the list” we were not on said list and we knew it. We argued with the poor girl for about 5 minutes that we were told we would be on the list and we needed to get in, it would be starting soon!! She finally gave a sigh of defeat and asked if we knew where we were supposed to be sitting and we said no it would be a standing ticket and she immediately gave all 3 of us standing passes to get in. That is one tip, if you are ever arguing that you are supposed to be on the list or you lost your ticket let them know it was just a standing ticket, they are WAY more likely to let you in for that. Once inside we grabbed 3 seats on the 4th row or so and sat down to enjoy the show and it was better than I ever imagined.

Here are some of the pics!

the models - what are they doing?

We had no idea what was going on, all the models are standing in rows by haircolor and no clear theme in the clothing as to what his inspiration was. It was only going to get more confusing from there…

Is that supposed to be a horse?

Now we have a kimono inspired look???

Look at the beautiful wood carving on her head…amazing!

now we have another horse? I saw this in the window at Colette a few months later, simply stunning up close.

is this some ice princess or something?

football players too??

now this is McQueen, we are not watching a fashion show, we are watching a chess match and now it all makes sense. That unexpected twist cemented him in my mind as the best of the best. I was in L.O.V.E.

Anyway that is why I love McQueen, he was always pushing the boundaries of what was expected and had a mind like no other.

I’m going to post pictures from all the other shows and all the stories of how I actually got in, they range from buying scalped front row tickets(V&R) to being dragged out by security only to be let back in (galliano) to bum rushing the gate (chloe) or just walking right past security without looking back as they shouted Mademoiselle, Mademoiselle, I need to see your ticket!! (YSL) I just wanted to share this right away in light of the news this morning.

If you are so inclined you can see the actual chess match played out.
